Ride for the Pass – Road Race

February 24, 2016 by Rachel Beck

Date: Saturday, May 18, 2019
Event Type: Road
Start Time: 10:00am
Location: Hwy 82 at the Winter Gate, 5 Miles East of Aspen

Course Description: The Ride for the Pass is a recreational or competitive road ride beginning five miles east of Aspen and the winter closure gate. It allows riders to enjoy this beautiful, scenic byway before it is opened to cars for the season. The ride benefits Independence Pass Foundation’s restoration work on the pass.

The Ride has two finish lines: The first at Weller Lake turnout, just over two miles from the starting line (for families and recreational riders), and the second at the Independence ghost town site ten miles from the start. All riders doing the ten mile Independence route are timed and included in the competitive category for their respective age groups; all Weller riders are non-timed.

NEW THIS YEAR: E-Bikes welcome!  Category 1/pedal assist e-bikes ONLY will be welcome to ride. They will be in there own, non-timed category and will NOT be eligible for prizes associated with placing. They will start 10 minutes after the timed Independence riders.

In years past the Ride has attracted almost 500 riders and starting line registration has been crowded, so riders are encouraged to pre-register prior to the Ride. Winning race times to Independence are usually around 40 minutes, with most riders finishing in less than two hours.

There are aid stations and turnaround sites at various points along the route. The Ride is followed by a party at the St. Regis Hotel in Aspen featuring free beer and other beverages, as well as dozens of fantastic drawing prizes donated by Roaring Fork Valley businesses.

Registration:

  • This race is not run by the ACC race so you must register with Ride For The Pass separately. Race day on-site registration closes at 9:00am Saturday morning! Avoid the crowds and focus on your warm-up by registering on-line at https://www.independencepass.org/registration
  • All current ACC members who race in the competitive event will receive regular ACC race points within their ACC category. If you wish to receive race points you must be a registered ACC member prior to the race. We are not awarding participation points for the recreational event.

Because this race is held on a closed road middle school age racers are eligible to receive ACC points.

If you volunteer you will get ACC marshal credit. You must be a current ACC member and notify the ACC results coordinator in order to receive your credit.

Please do your best to come out and support this great community event.
