We also work with local governments and bike shops in self-regulating the use of our local trails and roads for responsible bike usage.

Castle Creek presented by The Aspen Times (Road)

The 2019 Castle Creek Road Race is presented by The Aspen Times.

Date: Wednesday, July 17, 2019
Race Name: Castle Creek
Location: Register at Aspen Valley Hospital parking. Race starts on Castle Creek Road near the Music Festival campus.
Parking: Do not park at AVH. Please park in Aspen and ride to registration.
Start Time: 6:00pm
Event Type: Road
Party: There is no party this week.

Course Description: This 22 mile road race features about 2,000 feet of elevation gain over the rolling terrain of Castle Creek Road. The race will be staged near Music School Road off of Castle Creek Road. The race will proceed approximately 11 miles up Castle Creek Road past Ashcroft and the Pine Creek Cookhouse to the end of the County Road and the turn off to Pearl Pass. From the turn around, proceed back down Castle Creek Road 10 miles, and at about mile marker 3.5 and get ready for an uphill finish at the top of the hill opposite South Hayden Road. All categories will use the same course.

Start Times:

Wave 1, Men’s A: 6:00pm

Wave 2, Women’s A, Men’s B: 6:03pm

Wave 3: All other categories: 6:06pm

Warm-Up: Please do not warm up on the race course after 6:00pm. After that time, please do not ride anywhere on Castle Creek Road except when riding to the start line. Be respectful of traffic and property during your warmup. Do not block cars, and do not urinate in public. If caught urinating, you will be disqualified from the evening’s race. Plan accordingly.

Smuggler Hunter Creek XC – MTB Race

Course Description:

Long Course: Take Smuggler Mountain Road to Behind the Sign (BTS) Trail, turn left at Picnic Loop. Turn left onto Lollipop, stay right on Lollipop, turn left on Lollipop Cutoff, right onto Lollipop Cutoff and right back onto Lollipop. Follow Lollipop Extension to Iowa Shaft Cutoff and turn right, then follow Iowa Shaft Shortcut and turn right on Hunter Creek Valley South Trail. Continue onto Hunter Creek Valley Trail. Turn left onto Hummingbird and climb up Upper Hummingbird. Turn right onto Hunter Creek Road and continue up to 4 Corners. At 4 Corners turn left then turn onto Secret Trail and continue to new Upper Plunge Trail. Turn left and descend Upper Plunge Trail, cross Red Mountain Road, and descend Lower Plunge Trail. At the bottom of Plunge, keep right onto Hunter Valley North, and continue to the finish line at connector trail to Hunter Valley South.

Kids’ Cycling Field Day

8:30a -10:30a – 2 Volunteers – Bike Checks (Help check bikes to ensure they are safe to ride for skills/racing – prefer some mechanic knowledge.)

9:30a – 11:30a – 4 Volunteers (Race Crew for Fun Race and Eliminator)

11:00a – 1:00p – 2 Volunteers (Bike Prep and Race Crew for Adult Strider Race)

Road Racing Skills Clinic #2

Location: Aspen Motorsports Park. Please be cooperative and courteous to the Aspen Racing and Sports Car Club personnel and please be intelligent about how you park!
Start Time: 5:30pm

This event is free for all participants! Make sure to check in with Tyler Newton to sign the waivers!

Description: Join Coach Dean Hill of Aspen Pro Cycling and other veteran racers from the Aspen Cycling Club for an evening of fun and accessible road racing skills and drills! Geared toward beginner and intermediate road racers, the May 1 clinic will utilize the smooth pavement and sweeping turns at Woody Creek’s Aspen Motorsports Park to focus on increasing bike-handling skills. Skills covered will include:

  • Hand and body positions, including riding, braking, and racing in the drops
  • Braking techniques and postures
  • Cornering drills, focusing on line, radius, entry/exit speed, and braking
  • Dealing with irregular road surfaces such as gravel, road debris, and wet/dry road conditions
  • Learning how to sprint and climb out of the saddle

Skills covered will include:

  • Riding closely and safely
  • Strategies for avoiding and getting out of bad situations
  • Pace line techniques
  • Environmental challenges (e.g., wind, changes in road direction, cornering, etc.)
  • Speed control within a group
