The 2nd road race on the 2014 Aspen Cycling Club calendar will be held Wednesday May 14 starting at 6pm. Join us in Carbondale for the Spring Gulch Hill Climb. Following the event, join us at the Red Rock Diner for a party to kick off another season of racing. Club members will receive tickets for two drinks as well as a variety of appetizers. The party will start around 7:15pm.
Start Line/Parking: The Spring Gulch Hill Climb will start near the entrance to Colorado Rocky Mountain School (CRMS) in Carbondale. To get to the start and CRMS, take Highway 133 towards Main Street in Carbondale (7/11 intersection). Turn right at 7/11 onto Main Street and proceed about 1.1 miles to CRMS, 1493 County Road 106. Limited parking is available in the pull-outs on Thompson Creek Road, just past CRMS. Carpooling is encouraged! Since we will be heading to Red Rock Diner after the race, you may also park BEHIND the Diner and ride to the start as part of your warm up.
Start Times/Groups: This is a mass start event. Start order will be Senior Men A at 6:00pm, then Vet Men A two minutes later, followed by all Women’s categories plus Sport, Masters, and High School/Middle School groups three minutes later. The start will be a neutral roll out from the bend near CRMS with racing going live after you cross the bridge and pass the Crystal River Road intersection on your left.
New Extended Course for 2014: For this years Spring Gulch Hill Climb, we have added an additional 0.6 miles to the course and another 100 vertical feet of climbing. If you have done this race in the past, please take note of the new finish location. This years race will be 6.6 miles from start to finish gaining around 1700 vertical feet. The course averages over 6% but begins with a much steeper climb. For this years finish, racers will continue past the Spring Gulch parking lot another 0.6 miles. The finish line will be located on Thompson Creek Road where FS Road 306 cuts off to the left. This is the first dirt road on the left past the nordic center. Please note, there is no center line on this county road so riders will need to be respectful of the rules and act accordingly. The road surface is chip and seal with abundant wildlife and the occasional pothole. Please be careful on the way down!
