Smuggler/Hunter Creek Mountain Bike Race- 520 Grill Party
Up next on the 2015 summer calendar is the classic Smuggler/Hunter Creek mountain bike race. The race will take place on Wednesday July 15th starting at 6pm in Aspen. This weeks race will be followed by a party hosted by our sponsor, 520 Grill.
Kids Race: This week we will also host a kids race for children ages 6-13. The young ones will start immediately following all other groups at approximately 6:15 pm.
The Course: This year’s course has been redesigned to take advantage of the some of the new trails on Smuggler Mountain. Please read the course directions carefully!!
From the start line at the base of Smuggler Mountain in Aspen, racers will head up Smuggler Mountain Road (SMR). At the top of Smuggler near the observation deck, continue STRAIGHT onto the Behind the Sign Trail (BTS). Continue on BTS trail staying LEFT at all the intersections. Take a LEFT where the trail intersects Smuggler Mountain Road, continue through the wooden gate and then take a RIGHT on the southern portion of Tootsie Roll and ascend. At the top of Tootsie roll, take a LEFT for a very short descent down Smuggler Mountain Road and then a quick RIGHT back onto Tootsie roll and continue to descend. At the bottom of Tootsie Roll take a RIGHT onto Lollipop and traverse. Take a LEFT at the lollipop cutoff (LC) and descend. At the bottom of LC take a RIGHT at the Hunter Creek Cutoff road and descend. At the capped mine area, make a RIGHT onto the Iowa Shaft Trail and follow it for a short distance. Racers will take a left onto the new Iowa Shaft Cutoff Trail and descend this to the bottom. At the bottom of Iowa Shaft Cutoff, take a RIGHT on the doubletrack and follow it upvalley. Racers will take A LEFT BEFORE CROSSING THE BRIDGE onto the hunter creek single track. Take a RIGHT onto the 10th Mountain Division bridge. Once over the bridge, continue STRAIGHT onto a short trail to the Four Corners Rd (FCR) and take a LEFT to begin the next climb.
All racers will continue up this Four Corners Road.
SPORT/WOMEN/MASTERS DIVISIONS- Follow the Four Corners Road to a right turn onto Lower Plunge (USE CAUTION ON THIS ROCKY DESCENT). At the bottom make a RIGHT onto the Hunter Creek valley floor trail, continuing to the finish a 1/4 mile later near the old mining cabins.
SENIOR MEN A/SENIOR MEN B/VET MEN A- Continue up Four Corners Road all the way to Four Corners. At the top, take a RIGHT onto the Hobbit Trail. Follow this to Van Horn Park, bearing left at a double track intersection in the meadow. Descend through Van Horn Park and bear right onto the Hunter Creek Overlook Trail (aka Rim Trail). This group will finish by descending back down the 4 Corners Road to a left turn DOWN THE LOWER PLUNGE; SAME FINISH AS THE Sport/Masters.
START TIMES: The Senior Men A will leave at 6:00pm followed by Senior Men B two minutes later at 6:02pm. Vet Men A will start at 6:05 pm followed by all Women’s categories plus all Sport, Masters, and High School/Middle School groups at 6:10pm. This kids race will take place at around 6:15 pm after all other groups have left.
REGISTRATION AND MEMBERSHIP: PLEASE NOTE: ALL racers must check in (even if you have your number) and ACC kindly requests that any new registrants should arrive early (before 5:50pm) to complete registration. Registration takes place in the Smuggler parking lot from 5:00 and 5:50 pm. Cost is $5 for club members and $10 for non-members.
MARSHALS: Marshals are always needed! New for 2015, you MUST Marshal one race, road or mountain, in order to qualify for end of season championship standings. No ACC points will be awarded for your first Marshal effort. Each additional race marshaled will be awarded 15 points to either the road or mountain bike series as selected by the ACC member. A new and improved Marshal sign up system will be in place to make planning and scheduling your marshaling commitments easier for everyone. CANCELLATION POLICY- In the event of inclement weather on race day, the Aspen Cycling Club Board of Directors will communicate with the race director to determine the club’s ability to operate a race that is reasonably safe for competitors and for mountain bike races, preserves the integrity of local trails. All racers should assume that a final decision will be made at the start line by the race director. However, when possible, the Board of Directors will alert racers of a race cancellation prior to the start by emailing the club email group, posting on the website and the ACC Facebook page by 5 p.m. PLEASE DO NOT PHONE OR TEXT THE RACE DIRECTOR FOR RACE CANCELLATION INFORMATION.
