Government Trail Mountain Bike Race and Red Mountain Grill Party
The next race of the 2015 season takes place Wednesday, August 5th at 6:00PM starting in Snowmass Village. The annual Government Trail mountain bike race is truly an Aspen classic. This is a technical race course with a good mix of climbing and descending that will test all of your skills.
START, COURSE, and FINISH
This week, all classes will race the same course. The Senior Men A will leave at 6:00pm followed by Senior Men B two minutes later at 6:02pm. Vet Men A will start at 6:05 pm followed by all Women’s categories plus all Sport, Masters, and High School/Middle School groups at 6:10pm.
Registration and the start line will be at Base Village in Snowmass Village. From the start line, the race will head uphill under the Elk Camp Gondola and up the work road until connecting to the bottom of the Verde Trail single track. Ride Verde all the way up to the intersection with the Elk Camp Work Road.
(PLEASE NOTE: Verde is a downhill-only trail. There will be ABSOLUTELY no pre-riding this section of the course at any time! We are only allowed to ride up Verde on race night at 6pm. Please spread the word!)
At the top of Verde, riders will take a left on the work road for a short distance and then head straight into the Government trail. Ride Government all the way to Buttermilk and Tiehack. When the trail comes out on the pavement continue downhill on the road for about 200 yards. Just before the Tiehack bridge, take a hard right onto a downhill section of trail passing under the bridge. At the bottom of the double track road, take a hard left onto the Maroon Creek Trail. Race along this sweet riverside trail until crossing under the Highway 82 Maroon Creek Bridge. You’ll then have a short punchy climb up a dirt and gravel road to the finish line next to the golf course.
The afterparty will be hosted by the Aspen Cycling Club at the Red Mountain Grill at the Aspen Golf Course. Roll right through the finish into the Grill for “recovery” beverages and some well deserved eats! Appetizers and selected beer, wine and soft drinks will be provided by the ACC to all racers and race volunteers. Come for a drink, stay for dinner.
Marshals are always needed! New for 2015, you MUST Marshal one race, road or mountain, in order to qualify for end of season championship standings. No ACC points will be awarded for your first Marshal effort. Each additional race marshaled will be awarded 15 points to either the road or mountain bike series as selected by the ACC member. A new and improved Marshal sign up system will be in place to make planning and scheduling your marshaling commitments easier for everyone. To sign up to Marshal for this race or any race this season please go to:
In the event of inclement weather on race day, the Aspen Cycling Club Board of Directors will communicate with the race director to determine the club’s ability to operate a race that is reasonably safe for competitors and for mountain bike races, preserves the integrity of local trails. All racers should assume that a final decision will be made at the start line by the race director. However, when possible, the Board of Directors will alert racers of a race cancellation prior to the start by emailing the club email group, posting on the website and the ACC Facebook page by 5 p.m. PLEASE DO NOT PHONE OR TEXT THE RACE DIRECTOR FOR RACE CANCELLATION INFORMATION.
